When Does Your Smartphone Battery Need Replacing?
The lithium-ion batteries used in modern smartphones are designed to last for approximately 300–500 full charge cycles. After this, their capacity and performance begin to decline. But how do you know when your battery is due for a replacement?
1. Battery Drains Quickly
If a smartphone that used to last all day now only lasts 3–4 hours with normal use, this is the clearest sign that the battery's capacity has drastically decreased. A healthy battery should retain at least 80% of its original capacity.
2. Phone Unexpectedly Shuts Down Even with Battery Remaining
A smartphone that suddenly turns off even though the battery indicator still shows 20–40% is a serious symptom. This happens because the battery cells are no longer capable of supplying enough power to run the processor, even if the percentage still appears to have some remaining.
3. Swollen Battery
This is an emergency sign that should not be ignored. A swollen battery indicates gas formation inside the cells due to chemical degradation. Signs include: the screen or back casing of the phone starting to lift, or the phone feeling thicker than usual. Replace the battery immediately and do not charge the phone in this condition.
4. Phone Feels Very Hot During Use or Charging
Excessive heat — especially in the battery area — during normal use or charging can indicate a degraded battery. A damaged battery works harder to produce the same power, thus generating more heat.
5. Charging Time Becomes Very Long
If a phone that typically charges fully in 1–2 hours now takes 4–5 hours, it could be that the battery is no longer able to efficiently accept charging current. This could also be caused by a faulty charger, so be sure to check both.
6. Inaccurate Battery Percentage
A battery whose percentage jumps — for example, from 50% directly to 20% without heavy use — indicates that the battery sensor or the battery cells themselves are no longer functioning properly.
7. Phone Often Restarts on Its Own
Frequent spontaneous restarts, especially when the battery is below 30%, can indicate that the battery is unable to supply stable power to the system.
